2014 Sintra Pro – PORTUGAL

A SPECIAL PLACE FOR MY WORD TITLES

I have come to Sintra for more than ten years now and for me it is the place where the World crown came to me twice : in 2010 and in 2014… Every year, I am stocked to see the involvement of the organizers, the crowd on the beach and I really appreciate this complete event : Open, Drop-knee and Women divisions. It is always a great moment of competition.
On my first title, in 2010, I remember that I surfed my final against Guillermo Cobo with no string tied to my fins. Then I lost one fin on my first wave and I continued and won the heat with one fin only.
Never panic, just keep focused on your target.

In 2014, I was competing in both Open and Drop-knee divisions and it was the first time for me to win a DK World tour event. I was there with Magdalena and our son Oliver, three weeks after our wedding. It was great to get the World title with her next to me, as she was the one who re-motivated me for the 2014 season after the mixed fortunes of 2013.
Keep your willpower stronger than disappointment.

2014 SURF TRIP in OZ

2014 in on. It is time to begin a new year with new challenges. After the first step of the 2014 APB Tour in Hawaii, I am back in Canary Island for training and packing my boards and stuff : on April we leave with my wife Magdalena and our son Oliver for a three months trip in Australia and Indonesia. On the road, in a van, for one month. Then visiting friends of ours before flying to Indonesia and Java. We are going to the wild, in the paradise of wave and nature, meeting nice people in the Land of Plenty.

2014 Arica Chilean Challenge – CHILE

ARICA 2014 – MY VICTORY

After nine years surfing El Floppo on IBA then APB Tour, with a second place in 2010, I eventually conquered this fabulous wave that is my favorite one on the World Tour. I have spendt nine years, year after year, discovering this powerful slab, these strong and solid waves, the endless swell. Nine years enjoying the big and opened heart of Chilean people.
The 2014 final against PLC has been an incredible duel and the talent of Pierre-Louis forced me to do my best to finish the job. I am so happy and proud to raise the trophy. I was lucky to surf in such conditions, with such a good friend and rival and so big conditions.
Que Dios le bendiga a Chile !
Arica te quiero…
Never give up, always push up your limits.

READY FOR 2014 ?

After the queer 2013 year, I find a new motivation with a good training in Canarys island. And you know what happen in 2014. So remember : never quit, just believe in it and keep focused on your goal.

2013 Free Surf Canary Island

See my daily routine in Galdar – Gran Canaria, playing in my waves garden with the local riders who have surfed there since they were born or so.
Enjoy these endless sessions at El Fronton, La Guancha or El Agujero, the three spots easily I can see from my window, then you will understand why Canary islands are called the European Hawaï.
This place is my training residence and the quality of the waves help me to progress every day.

2013 HAWAII

For this comp, in Feb 2013, Malennhy is with me, she is expecting our son Oliver.
We spend a very nice time and the waves offer good conditions for fun and pleasure. Aloha !

2010 – BACK TO REUNION ISLAND TO CELEBREATE MY TITLE

Reunion Island, September 2010

SHARING MY JOY WITH MY ISLAND

Some days after my victory in Sintra (Portugal) in early September 2010, I am back home to Reunion island.
It is not a normal trip for me, because some days before, in Sintra, I won the title of World Champion.
Reunion Island is on fire, as I am the first Reunion Islander, French and European rider ever to win a professional World Title in a sliding sport.

The plane lands and I get out of the delivery zone a bit tired after a 11-hours flight.
As the exit gates open, I am surprised by an incredible and unforgetable welcome by many friends with a big ovation in the arrival hall.
I feel deeply moved by their presence, their happiness and their cheers.
La Réunion lé la !!!

By the way, after the interviews at the airport and meetings, time is for joy and euphoria, with the night party on the beach on Boucan Canot, in St Gilles-les-Bains.
A big crowd was here, simply happy and proud to share my unseen World Title.
I am so grateful for all Reunion riders who made me discover the bodyboard and supported me all to get this title and still today and ever.

See me on Matthieu Schiller’s shoulders at the airport, see him on the last pictures, with his green tee-shirt during the beach party.
Look at these pictures and praise.
We are on 2010 Sept, one year later he will die in a shark attack, just down this beach.

All these moments are really precious because it is pure joy and they happen BEFORE the dramas, before the 30 victims attacked by sharks in Reunion Island since 2011.

It is a moment of grace because we are all alive and happy and none of us knows what will happen after.

2011- ISA GAMES – Gran canaria

El Fronton, Galdar – Gran Canaria , October 2011

On the previous year, in December 2010, the last step of the IBA WT took place in El Confital (Las Palmas de Grand Canaria).
In 2011, the ISA WORLD GAMES are organized on the legendary spot of Gran Canaria, in Galdar, The Fronton, a little further up north.
These Bodyboarding ISA World Games happen on very high-leveled waves and big-valued riders.
It is my third selection with the French Bodyboardind Team for the ISA World Games ( 2006 in California and 2008 in Portugal).

Pierre-Louis Costes and I are members of the French Team, with big pressure on our shoulders but big vibes too.
The final of the Open Men is probably our first official big assault with big moves and big scores.
Our friendship and sporting rivalry are as strong on the waves as in life… On the podium, PLC gets the Gold and let me the Silver medal.
Both our results and the scores of others French Team riders make France the 20111 ISA World Champion by Team.

Among the organizers and Galdar’s inhabitants around there, I catch sight of a beautiful and incredible young woman.
Her brother is working with the organization of the contest.
Her name is Magdalena. Our paths just past each other. I ignore that it is the beginning of my Life…She enters my destiny.

2010 – SNIPER CELEBRATES MY 1ST WORLD TITLE

A TIME TO CELEBRATE AFTER THE WORLD TITLE

On his return from Ferrol (Spain) on 7 September 2010, Amaury goes to Hoff’s factory in Bayonne to share the joy of his new laurels with the SNIPER team. Lucky coïncidence of the calendar, the whole world team of Hoff’s distributors is present for the 2010-2011 presentation meeting : the arrival of the World Champion gives even more punch to their work. On the program, a press conference and an evening party were organized in his honour.

The press conference brings together the riding media and representatives of the FFS (National French Surf League). Marc Faraht – the Hoff CEO – praises the historic title that Amaury brings to the SNIPER brand and the entire Hoff company:
« We are very happy and proud to have this exceptional rider in our ranks, quite simply. This is an unique moment that we want to share with him. »

Amaury has joined the SNIPER team when he first started competing in 2003 with just a few boards to start with. Then the adventure accelerated with the promodels and with the results on the scoreboards for his stunning debut on the IBA World Tour in 2007.
Since then, the confidence has been confirmed, and Amaury expresses his pride in being part of this great and beautiful family of boardsports. And he thanks all the members of the Hoff company who have placed their trust in him over the years.

On the beginning of the press conference, Amaury dedicates his victory to three important people to him and who have passed away: his father, Matthieu Walbrou (Mat) and David Legleye, his friend from Reunion Island. This memory is full of emotion, Amaury remembers that Mat and David died on their trip back from the Sintra Pro in Portugal in 2001. He puts the highlights on his bumping 2010 Wold Tour and give his impressions on his series at the Sintra Pro 2020, where he has won his World Title.
He also talks about his two major projects: to ensure that the IBA title is recognized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in France and to achieve the great project of an IBATOUR step in Reunion Island.

« Everything I do, I don’t do it for me.
It’s first of all for bodyboarding,
this sport of passion, which is my whole life.
These projects are for the French sport,
for all the bodyboarders of my country
who need recognition and encouragement.
And for my island, Reunion Island,
which has a huge potential
both by its fabulous spots and by its riders of an excellent level.
I don’t want to carry these laurels alone,
I have to make them grow and fruitful.
With this title, I’m just opening a new door in the history of this sport.
I want to create new opportunities,
to make people want to dare.
Otherwise, what’s the point of being the champion? »

ALL TOGETHER !

After a full day of work and meetings, the whole team is on deck to prepare the party.
The factory shop looks like a large party hall with a DJ, a buffet and champagne. Relaxed and smiling, Amaury shares this festive moment with the Management, Marketing and Sales Teams of the whole HOFF company.
Cédric BORNAREL, representative of the Hoff company in Reunion Island, is also among the guests. And many other personalities such as : Iker AGUIRRE (NSI Ho5 Park), Ghislain VAGINAY (Inside Surf School), Frédérick MAGET (ex boss of Zone d’Impact), RIRAW Prod with the photographer Stéphane SALERNO and the video director Jean-François SARDA, Sébastien VAISSE (the brand new editor of Bodyboard Magazine), Guillaume Barucq (SurfPrevention. com), Stéphane BOULLY (ex-team manager at Hoff, now at Kanabeach and boss of the e-shop Board District) or the Spanish Edu BARTHOLOME (Meduxa.com).

To be noted, the presence of Christophe SEILLER (Cluster manager of EuroSIMA), Michel PLATEAU (Head of the FFS High Level Cluster) and Olivier AUCHERON (Nobelum and FFS bodyboard commission)…
As well as many riders including the legendary drop knee rider Dave HUBBARD (Hawaii) who was with Amaury in Sintra. He is about going to Reunion Island to spend a month discovering the island of Amaury. Charly CHAPELET (Reunion Island) the director of the Amaury dvd, accompanied by his girlfriend Laura Huscenot (sister of Reunion Maxime Huscenot, ISA Junior World Champion) and Fabrice MOULIN who followed Amaury on the European steps, Mathieu INCHAUSPE, Sébastien LACOMBE and so many others who come to join the whole event.

During the evening, Amaury signes three boards for the winners of a random-draw winners of its promodel SNIPER and put his autographs on the official IBA World Champion poster.

The next day, he flies back home to Reunion Island.
Amaury’s heart is full of these precious memories.
He is so impatient to share other incredible moments with all his brothers of Reunion Island.

2010 – PIPE MASTER Hawaii

I win the mythic Pipe Line Pro !

The Turbo Pipe Line Pro on the North Shore in Hawaii is the first event – and the main event – which opens every year the IBA World Tour in which I have been participating for 3 years as a professional. The 2010 edition started on Feb. 16 with the trials, with a 10-day waiting period, as the conditions were expected to be better at the end of the week. I feel impatient after such a long wait.

A flawless course

Friday 26th is the last day of competition, the comp has restarted in perfect conditions with solid waves between 8 and 12 feet. As I am in the top 16 (Top 6 WT 2009), I enter directly in the 1/8 finals (round 8). I start with a 9.5/10 just to test my form and determination. I go step by step in the contest, focused on each series without thinking about the final, to ensure my surfing throughout the course. I feel in a flawless run to the final. I ensure my confidence by finishing first in each heat. In the semi-finals, I defeat Ben Player (Australian, 2 times World Champion) very motivated for the title at Pipe and Pierre-Louis Costes, my best rival and friend.

A stunning finale

I feel no pressure, I am just happy to be in the final. On the end on the heat, I score high with a precise and daring trick : barrel-back flip-rollo and I get an unexpected 10… A sort of dream for all thrill seekers and for me ! With 17.50/20 score, I leave high and dry Damian King (Australia), Diego Cabrera (Canaries) and Jared Houston (South Africa). I am really full of emotion and joy. It is a moment of grace, I want to share with all those who follow me and trust me.

A coveted title

I have been training hard since my arrival in Hawaii in early February. I am in a great shape and focused. I feel my progress, my commitment and my motivation getting bigger. I want to do better than I did in 2007 when I was 3^rd in the final on the same even, a première for a French and European bodyboarder.
With this victory, I probably fulfill one of my big dreams. It is of the most coveted titles, the North Shore is one of the most difficult to ride as the extreme conditions make this spot inaccessible.
Reunion Island and France now have their flag engraved in the PipeLine rock, next to the biggest names in bodyboarding. With 2000 points, I take the lead of the 2010 WT that will continue until December, between Australia, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, then Europe with Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands… It’ gonna to be a long season, I’ve got to stay the course. I will keep my goal. MY LIFELONG DREAM…
